O tráfico de escravos que assolou o Golfo de Benim (séculos XIV-XVIII) não poupou o Togo. Embora a costa fosse a zona mais movimentada por essa atividade, era o interior que fornecia os escravos capturados. No norte do Togo, os Semassi eram os verdadeiros caçadores de escravos lama1 e nawdéba, que eram transportados para a costa atlântica para partir para as Américas. No entanto, o que acontecia àqueles que não eram embarcados? Pouco depois dessa época sombria, a colonização europeia do século XIX marcou profundamente todos os povos deste país, incluindo os Kabiyè2, reconhecidos como resistentes à penetração colonial. Na véspera da independência do Togo, em 1960, a sociedade kabiyè estava dividida entre colaboradores e resistentes. Como é que aqueles que não colaboraram encarnam a recusa da ordem colonial? Um dos legados dessa colonização é o modo de gestão fundiária, que hoje constitui um barril de pólvora na sociedade togolesa, pois as questões fundiárias são interpretadas de forma diferente pelas diferentes comunidades.
