Der Sklavenhandel, der im Golf von Benin (14.-18. Jahrhundert) grassierte, verschonte auch Togo nicht. Die Küste war zwar das Gebiet, in dem diese Aktivität am stärksten betrieben wurde, doch das Landesinnere lieferte die Sklaven. Im Norden Togos waren die Semassi die eigentlichen Jäger der Lama1- und Nawdéba-Sklaven, die an die Atlantikküste gebracht wurden, um von dort nach Amerika verschifft zu werden. Was geschah jedoch mit denen, die nicht verschifft wurden? Kurz nach dieser dunklen Zeit prägte die europäische Kolonialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert alle Völker dieses Landes tief, darunter auch die Kabiyè2, die als Widerstandskämpfer gegen die koloniale Durchdringung bekannt waren. Am Vorabend der Unabhängigkeit Togos im Jahr 1960 war die Kabiyè-Gesellschaft in Kollaborateure und Widerstandskämpfer gespalten. Wie verkörpern diejenigen, die nicht kollaboriert haben, die Ablehnung der kolonialen Ordnung? Eines der Vermächtnisse dieser Kolonialisierung ist die Art und Weise der Landverwaltung, die heute ein Pulverfass innerhalb der togolesischen Gesellschaft darstellt, da Landfragen von den verschiedenen Gemeinschaften unterschiedlich interpretiert werden.
