In 2004 the States of Jersey established the Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (JBMS) as part of its commitment to environmental monitoring. Members of the public were recruited to count butterflies at 38 locations across the island. During the first ten years of the JBMS these volunteers walked over 3,600 miles and counted exactly 122,279 butterflies. This book unveils the results of the JBMS’s first ten years of monitoring. The butterfly records are analysed and combined with habitat data, historical records and other information to offer an insight into the diversity, abundance and status of all Jersey’s butterfly species. As might be expected, the picture is mixed with some species doing better than others. The health of Jersey’s butterflies is discussed and suggestions are made as to how species’ populations and diversity can be encouraged to expand cross the island. This book also summarises historical records and acts as a guide to all of Jersey’s known butterfly species from the past and present.Features of this report include:A guide to all of Jersey’s current and historical butterfly species.A summary of ten years of intensive butterfly counting.Clear colour photographs of all the species featured.Information on the health of Jersey’s butterfly populations.Advice on the conservation and promotion of butterflies.

Life in cities has distanced human beings from nature and made it difficult to understand the ecology of life dependent on the environment. Urban water collection and distribution processes contribute significantly to the fragmentation of knowledge and the vital recognition of the water cycle. Without the effective participation of the subject in environmental actions, it is no...

  • Modeling Populations of Adaptive Individuals
    Bret C. Harvey / Steven F. Railsback
Ecologists now recognize that the dynamics of populations, communities, and ecosystems are strongly affected by adaptive individual behaviors. Yet until now, we have lacked effective and flexible methods for modeling such dynamics. Traditional ecological models become impractical with the inclusion of behavior, and the optimization approaches of behavioral ecology cannot be use...

A groundbreaking approach to scale and scaling in ecological theory and practiceScale is one of the most important concepts in ecology, yet researchers often find it difficult to find ecological systems that lend themselves to its study. Scaling in Ecology with a Model System synthesizes nearly three decades of research on the ecology of Sarracenia purpurea-the northern pitcher...

How do we explain the remarkably abrupt changes that sometimes occur in nature and society--and can we predict why and when they happen? This book offers a comprehensive introduction to critical transitions in complex systems--the radical changes that happen at tipping points when thresholds are passed. Marten Scheffer accessibly describes the dynamical systems theory behind cr...

    States of Jersey
The Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm) are located in the southern English Channel at a geographic crossroads between colder seas from the north and warmer waters to the south. This has made the islands suspectable to an unusually large number of non-native marine species from the wider English Channel, North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. This book assesse...
