To the uninitiated observer of modern literary history, the fairy tale-or Märchen, as it was definitively conceptualized within the German cultural sphere-occupies a modest and strictly sequestered domain. It is routinely categorized as a charming relic of agrarian folklore, a pedagogical instrument for the moral instruction of children, or a harmless mechanism of escapist entertainment designed to briefly relieve the mind from the arduous demands of empirical existence. Within this conventional framework, the fairy tale is defined precisely by its distance from truth; it is understood as an explicit, self-conscious departure from reality, a whimsical journey into an impossible landscape where logic is suspended and fantasy holds temporary sway. Yet, when one turns to the intellectual revolution that swept across Europe at the close of the eighteenth century, one encounters an absolute and stunning reversal of this modern prejudice. For the thinkers, poets, and philosophers of European Romanticism-most notably those associated with the early German movement of Frühromantik centered in Jena and Berlin-the Märchen was assigned a status that directly contradicts every contemporary assumption. It was not viewed as an escape from reality, but as the supreme key to reality itself. It was praised not as a naive or primitive genre, but as the absolute climax of artistic and philosophical expression, the Kanon der Poesie, and the singular medium capable of healing the catastrophic fractures of modern human consciousness.

The essay, as a notably hard form of writing to pin down, has inspired some unflattering descriptions: It is a greased pig, for example, or a pair of baggy pants into which nearly anything and everything can fit. In Tracing the Essay, G. Douglas Atkins embraces the very qualities that have moved others to accord the essay second-class citizenship in the world of letters.Drawing...
