Drawing on linguistics theorists such as Azambuja, Marcuschi, Perini, and Travaglia, as well as philosophers such as Antunes, Carvalho, and Hacking, we address the topic of teaching grammar in the classroom. Combining the readings made during the bibliographic review with field observations, we have come to the conclusion that the teaching of normative grammar, despite the various criticisms it has been subjected to by sociolinguistics, does not face much resistance among teachers and students, which leads us to conclude that it deserves the status it occupies. Grammar has proven to be, and has been recognised as, an important tool for acquiring the Portuguese language, serving as a reference and foundation for 'speaking well'. We treat language as an element of cultural identity, and we realise that weakening its teaching only serves as a tool for those who already master it.
