Im Zeitalter ständiger technologischer Umwälzungen und kürzerer Produktlebenszyklen ist Innovation zum entscheidenden Schlachtfeld geworden, auf dem sich Unternehmen entweder einen Wettbewerbsvorteil sichern oder in der Bedeutungslosigkeit versinken. Die bloße Erklärung, dass 'Innovation wichtig' ist, reicht jedoch nicht mehr aus. Manager und Wissenschaftler müssen gleichermaßen verstehen, wie, unter welchen Bedingungen und durch welche Mechanismen Wissen in wiederholbare, skalierbare und profitable Innovationsergebnisse umgewandelt wird. Die vorliegende Monographie stellt sich dieser Herausforderung, indem sie zwei traditionell getrennte Diskussionen zusammenführt: den Diskurs des strategischen Managements über wissensbasierte Fähigkeiten und die Literatur der Betriebsforschung über nichtlineare Innovationsdynamik. Unsere zentrale These ist, dass eine nachhaltige Innovationsleistung nicht einfach davon abhängt, wie viel ein Unternehmen für F&E ausgibt oder wie viele Patente es anmeldet. Vielmehr ist sie eine entstehende Eigenschaft eines komplexen adaptiven Systems, in dem Umweltunsicherheit, die Struktur der Wissensbasis (Breite versus Tiefe), die Geschwindigkeit der Wissensintegration und das intrinsische Chaos der Ressourcenallokation auf subtile, oft kontraintuitive Weise zusammenwirken.
