Na era da perpétua disrupção tecnológica e da redução dos ciclos de vida dos produtos, a inovação tornou-se o campo de batalha decisivo no qual as empresas asseguram uma vantagem competitiva ou se tornam irrelevantes. No entanto, a mera declaração de que 'a inovação é importante' já não é suficiente; tanto os gestores como os académicos têm de compreender como, em que condições e através de que mecanismos o conhecimento é transformado em resultados de inovação repetíveis, escaláveis e lucrativos. Esta monografia aborda esse desafio integrando duas conversas tradicionalmente separadas: o discurso da gestão estratégica sobre as capacidades baseadas no conhecimento e a literatura de investigação operacional sobre a dinâmica não linear da inovação. A nossa tese central é que o desempenho sustentável da inovação não é simplesmente uma função do montante que uma empresa gasta em I&D ou do número de patentes que regista; é antes uma propriedade emergente de um sistema adaptativo complexo em que a incerteza ambiental, a estrutura da base de conhecimento (amplitude versus profundidade), a velocidade de integração do conhecimento e o caos intrínseco da afetação de recursos interagem de formas subtis, muitas vezes contra-intuitivas.
