Tre sottospecie di gazzella di Soemmerring sono endemiche del corno d’Africa. Anche l’Eritrea ospita questa specie. In totale sono state registrate 272 gazzelle di Soemmerring, 80 gazzelle di Dorcas e 60 struzzi. I dati sono stati analizzati utilizzando il programma DISTANZA DEL TRANSETTO DI LINEA. I risultati hanno rivelato una densità di popolazione di 0,992 individui per kmq (con intervallo di confidenza al 95% 0,64489 - 1,5263). La stima della popolazione può essere estrapolata dal risultato: la gazzella di Soemmerring dovrebbe essere presente in un’area di circa 1000 km2 e si ritiene che raggiunga >700 gazzelle di Soemmerring. I gruppi di femmine contenenti giovani e di maschi adulti erano le due principali unità sociali. I branchi di 5-8 esemplari sono i più comuni. Tuttavia, le dimensioni dei branchi variano da 1 a 12 individui. La tendenza della popolazione è in leggero aumento negli ultimi sette anni, grazie agli sforzi compiuti dal governo eritreo, Ministero dell’Agricoltura, in collaborazione con la comunità locale. In passato questi animali erano ampiamente distribuiti lungo la penisola di Buri, mentre oggi si trovano in aree confinate e sparse. La prolungata siccità, la predazione, la caccia e la competizione sono alcune delle ragioni che contribuiscono al declino di queste specie.
