Zanieczyszczenie metalami ciężkimi jest kwestią o znaczeniu globalnym. Jest to główny problem środowiskowy stwarzany przez przemysł wydobywczy na całym świecie, dotykający większość krajów. Kopalnie Porgera odprowadzają odpady (odpady przeróbcze i miękkie skały) do systemu rzecznego Lagaip/Strickland, przez co system rzeczny jest narażony na zanieczyszczenie metalami ciężkimi. Próbki osadów pobrano wzdłuż wybranych miejsc systemów rzecznych i przeanalizowano pod kątem określonych metali, tj. Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb i Zn przy użyciu ICP-MS. Poziom zanieczyszczenia metalami ciężkimi w osadach oceniono za pomocą wskaźników zanieczyszczenia, w tym współczynnika zanieczyszczenia, stopnia zanieczyszczenia, zmodyfikowanego stopnia zanieczyszczenia i wskaźnika zanieczyszczenia Nemerowa. Ocenę ryzyka ekologicznego przeprowadzono przy użyciu czynników ryzyka ekologicznego, wskaźników potencjalnego ryzyka ekologicznego i opartych na konsensusie wytycznych dotyczących jakości osadów. Wyniki wskazują, że Pb, Zn i Cd stanowią długoterminowe zagrożenie w zbiorniku Lagaip Strickland, podczas gdy pozostałe metale ciężkie zostały uznane za mniej niebezpieczne na podstawie oceny jakości osadów.
