Die Schwermetallverschmutzung ist ein Thema von globaler Bedeutung. Sie ist ein großes Umweltproblem, das durch die Bergbauindustrie weltweit verursacht wird und die meisten Länder betrifft. Die Porgera-Minen leiten Abfälle (Abraum und weiches Gestein) in das Flusssystem Lagaip/Strickland ein, wodurch das Flusssystem der Gefahr einer Schwermetallverschmutzung ausgesetzt ist. Entlang ausgewählter Stellen des Flusssystems wurden Sedimentproben entnommen und mittels ICP-MS auf bestimmte Metalle, d. h. Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb und Zn, untersucht. Der Verschmutzungsgrad der Schwermetalle in den Sedimenten wurde mit Hilfe von Verschmutzungsindizes bewertet, darunter der Verschmutzungsfaktor, der Verschmutzungsgrad, der modifizierte Verschmutzungsgrad und der Verschmutzungsindex nach Nemerow. Die ökologische Risikobewertung wurde anhand von ökologischen Risikofaktoren, potenziellen ökologischen Risikoindizes und konsensbasierten Richtlinien für die Sedimentqualität durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Pb, Zn und Cd im Lagaip-Strickland-Stausee ein langfristiges Risiko darstellen, während die übrigen Schwermetalle auf der Grundlage von Bewertungen der Sedimentqualität als weniger gefährlich eingestuft wurden.
