In dit onderzoek werd Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) gebruikt om de chemische samenstelling te evalueren van het waterige bladextract van Artemisia annua, een plant die bekend staat om zijn geneeskrachtige eigenschappen. De bladeren werden verzameld, geverifieerd en verwerkt door ze te weken in steriel gedestilleerd water en methanol, uitgevoerd aan de Joseph Sarwuan Tarka Universiteit en de Universiteit van Ibadan, Nigeria. FTIR-analyse identificeerde verschillende belangrijke functionele groepen, waaronder een hydroxylgroep op 1028,75 cm-¹ (wat duidt op alcoholen), een alkeen op 1073,47 cm-¹ (wat duidt op diethylether), nitrillen op 1267,29 cm-¹ (bijv. methylamine), ethers op 1319,48 cm-¹, amines rond 1401,48 cm-¹, en mogelijke carbonzuren op 1621,39 cm-¹. Extra pieken wezen op de aanwezigheid van methylisocyanaat en benzonitril. De bevindingen bevestigen dat het waterige bladextract van Artemisia annua rijk is aan bioactieve verbindingen met diverse functionele groepen, wat de traditionele medicinale toepassingen ondersteunt en potentiële toepassingen in de farmacie en landbouw suggereert. Toekomstig onderzoek moet zich richten op het isoleren van deze verbindingen en het onderzoeken van hun biologische activiteiten en toepassingen.
