Unter den Nebenprodukten der Agrarindustrie, die in der Ernährung von Wiederkäuern verwendet werden, zeichnet sich Orangenschalen durch einen ähnlichen Nährwert wie Getreide und eine gute Akzeptanz bei den Tieren aus. Eine unsachgemäße Lagerung dieses Nebenprodukts führt jedoch zu einem raschen Rückgang seines Nährwerts und zur Entwicklung unerwünschter Mikroorganismen, die bei Verzehr die Gesundheit der Herde schädigen und zudem Gülle produzieren, die bei Kontakt mit dem Grundwasser zu Kontaminationen führt. Aufgrund dieser Problematik setzt die Industrie Pelletierung ein, um die Haltbarkeit zu verlängern, doch oft macht dieser Prozess das Futter für den Produzenten finanziell unrentabel, sodass Silage wirtschaftlich sinnvoller sein kann. In diesem Sinne behandelt dieses Buch noch ungeklärte Fragen zur Verwendung von Orangenschalen-Silage als Ersatz für Mais in der Ernährung von Schafen in Stallhaltung, von den Eigenschaften der Silage über die Leistung der Tiere bis hin zur Fleischqualität.
