Das Yonki-Reservoir befindet sich im Bezirk Kainantu in Papua-Neuguinea. Die Fischarten im Stausee sind durch anthropogene Aktivitäten wie den alluvialen Goldabbau in kleinem Maßstab und die Abwasserentsorgung in den Einzugsgebieten bedroht. Mit Schwermetallen kontaminierte Fische stellen eine Bedrohung für Wasserorganismen und Menschen dar, die auf Fisch als Nahrungsmittel angewiesen sind. Ziel dieser Studie war es, den Gehalt an Chrom (Cr), Arsen (As), Kadmium (Cd), Blei (Pb), Quecksilber (Hg), Kupfer (Cu), Zink (Zn) und Nickel (Ni) im Oberflächenwasser und in den Sedimenten des Yonki-Stausees und der oberen Bäche während der Regen- und Trockenzeit zu bestimmen. Schwermetalle wurden auch in den Geweben ausgewählter Fischarten aus dem Yonki-Stausee untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die physiochemischen Parameter und Schwermetalle im Oberflächenwasser innerhalb der WHO-Grenzwerte (2011) für das Überleben von Wasserorganismen lagen. Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni und Pb überstiegen die Richtwerte für die Sedimentqualität in der Trockenzeit im Vergleich zur Regenzeit. Die Werte des Geoakkumulationsindex zeigten, dass Pb in den Sedimenten vor allem in der Trockenzeit stark kontaminiert war. Schließlich wurde ein Abfallbewirtschaftungsplan empfohlen.
