Il lago artificiale di Yonki si trova nel distretto di Kainantu, in Papua Nuova Guinea. Le specie ittiche presenti nel bacino sono ora minacciate dalle attività antropiche, come le attività di estrazione dell’oro alluvionale su piccola scala e le pratiche di smaltimento delle acque reflue nei bacini idrografici. I pesci contaminati da metalli pesanti rappresentano una minaccia per gli organismi acquatici e per gli esseri umani, che dipendono dal pesce per l’alimentazione. Questo studio mirava a valutare i livelli di cromo (Cr), arsenico (As), cadmio (Cd), piombo (Pb), mercurio (Hg), rame (Cu), zinco (Zn) e nichel (Ni) nelle acque superficiali e nei sedimenti dell’area del bacino idrico di Yonki e dei torrenti superiori durante le stagioni umide e secche. I metalli pesanti sono stati valutati anche nei tessuti di specie ittiche selezionate del lago artificiale di Yonki. I risultati hanno rivelato che i parametri fisiochimici e i metalli pesanti presenti nelle acque superficiali rientravano nei limiti stabiliti dall’OMS (2011) per la sopravvivenza degli organismi acquatici. Cr, Cd, Cu, Ni e Pb hanno superato i livelli guida di qualità dei sedimenti durante la stagione secca rispetto alla stagione umida. I valori dell’indice di geo-accumulo hanno mostrato che il Pb nei sedimenti era fortemente contaminato, soprattutto durante la stagione secca. Infine, ha raccomandato un piano di gestione dei rifiuti.
