L’Igboland, situato nella parte meridionale della Nigeria, crede in un dio supremo chiamato Chukwu Abiama o Chineke, che significa Dio che ha creato tutte le cose. Il concetto di chukwu (il dio supremo) è stato ampiamente propagato dagli Aros di Arochukwu, nel Delta del Niger orientale, nel XVIII secolo, grazie all’utilizzo dell’oracolo Ibini ukpabi. Gli Igbo credono che il Dio supremo, che non può essere visto o raggiunto direttamente, possa essere avvicinato attraverso altre divinità minori o spiriti chiamati arusi o agbara che hanno la forma di oggetti naturali. I Dibia e i Sommi Sacerdoti sono i portavoce delle divinità e sono i mediatori mistici tra il mondo umano e il mondo degli spiriti e agiscono come guaritori, scribi, insegnanti, indovini e consiglieri delle persone nella comunità. Gli Igbo credono che i loro antenati vivano nel mondo degli spiriti, dove possono essere contattati. Al di sotto degli arusis ci sono gli spiriti minori e più generici, noti come mmuo, definiti in modo approssimativo in base alla loro natura percepita come malevola o benigna. Questi spiriti minori non sono venerati e a volte sono considerati le anime perdute dei morti. Alcune delle religioni Igbo praticate ancora oggi comprendono cerimonie per il raccolto come il festival dell’igname nuovo, l’ekpe, l’ekpo e il mmanwu.
