Genetyka molekularna wniosła ogromny wkład w naszą wiedzę na temat dziedzicznych wad rozwojowych oczu. Nauki podstawowe i kliniczne ograniczały się do opisu i klasyfikacji fenotypów w oparciu o morfologię, biochemię i fizjologię. Postępy w tej dziedzinie były poważnie utrudnione przez utratę informacji genetycznej. Utrata wzroku wynika głównie z pewnych zmian lub czynników środowiskowych wpływających na soczewkę oka. Najważniejsze czynniki ryzyka, takie jak wiek i dziedziczność, są związane z różnymi rodzajami zaćmy. Podczas gdy czynnik dziedziczny nie wymaga wyjaśnienia, wiek jest jednym z wielu możliwych czynników ryzyka, których wpływ ma charakter kumulacyjny. Ludzki układ wzrokowy składa się z dwóch części: oko pełni funkcję receptora obrazu, przechwytując światło, które jest następnie przekazywane do ośrodków przetwarzania obrazu w mózgu. Każda wada ścieżki wzrokowej prowadzi do utraty wzroku. W okresie od października 2013 r. do kwietnia 2014 r. przeprowadzono retrospektywne badanie analityczne wszystkich przypadków zaćmy wrodzonej w Lahore, obserwowanych w oddziale CC szpitala Layton Rahamatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT). Celem badania była ocena częstości występowania ekstrakcji soczewki i ślepoty u pacjentów z CC.
