A genética molecular ajudou muito a entender as malformações oculares hereditárias. A ciência básica e clínica ficava só na descrição e classificação dos fenótipos com base na morfologia, bioquímica e fisiologia. O progresso foi bem prejudicado pela perda de informações genéticas. A perda de visão nos olhos é principalmente por causa de algumas mudanças ou fatores ambientais que afetam o cristalino. Os fatores de risco mais importantes, idade e hereditariedade, estão associados a diferentes tipos de catarata. Enquanto o fator hereditário é autoexplicativo, a idade é considerada uma alternativa para vários fatores de risco possíveis, cujo efeito é cumulativo. O sistema visual humano consiste em duas partes: o olho atua como receptor de imagens para capturar a luz, que é então transmitida aos centros de processamento de imagens no cérebro. Qualquer defeito na via visual leva à perda da visão. Um estudo analítico retrospectivo foi realizado entre outubro de 2013 e abril de 2014 em todos os casos de catarata congénita em Lahore atendidos na unidade de CC do hospital Layton Rahamatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT). O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a incidência de extração do cristalino e cegueira em pacientes com CC.
