A camada mista oceânica é definida como a camada próxima à superfície, bem misturada verticalmente, que pode ser induzida tanto por forças atmosféricas (arrefecimento da superfície e/ou agitação do vento) quanto por processos oceânicos (advecção lateral, circulação de Langmuir, interação entre ondas e correntes, ondas internas). A camada mista (ML) afeta diretamente a troca de calor e momento entre o ar e o mar, contribuindo assim para a temperatura da superfície do mar, que é uma das variáveis oceânicas mais importantes para o clima da Terra. Os principais processos biológicos e químicos oceânicos que desempenham papéis cruciais no clima da Terra também ocorrem na ML. Vários investigadores têm investigado a variabilidade da profundidade da camada mista (MLD) nos oceanos globais ou regionais, incluindo o Oceano Pacífico Norte. No entanto, a distribuição da MLD climatológica em toda a bacia do Mar do Leste nunca foi totalmente investigada, embora seja uma informação fundamental para compreender a variabilidade espaço-temporal dos materiais biogeoquímicos e para avaliar o desempenho dos modelos numéricos. Tem sido sugerido que a variabilidade da MLD do Mar do Leste pode ser afetada por padrões de circulação à escala da bacia, correntes de fronteira e atividade de redemoinhos de mesoescala.
