Lo strato misto oceanico è definito come lo strato superficiale ben miscelato verticalmente che può essere indotto sia da forze atmosferiche (raffreddamento superficiale e/o agitazione del vento) sia da processi oceanici (advezione laterale, circolazione di Langmuir, interazione onde-correnti, onde interne). Lo strato misto (ML) influenza direttamente lo scambio di calore e quantità di moto tra aria e mare, contribuendo così alla temperatura della superficie del mare, che è una delle variabili oceaniche più importanti per il clima terrestre. Anche i principali processi biologici e chimici oceanici che svolgono un ruolo cruciale nel clima terrestre si verificano nello strato misto. Numerosi ricercatori hanno studiato la variabilità della profondità dello strato misto (MLD) nell’oceano globale o negli oceani regionali, compreso l’Oceano Pacifico settentrionale. Tuttavia, la distribuzione climatologica della MLD nel Mar Orientale non è mai stata studiata in modo approfondito, sebbene si tratti di un’informazione fondamentale per comprendere la variabilità spazio-temporale dei materiali biogeochimici e per valutare le prestazioni dei modelli numerici. È stato suggerito che la variabilità della MLD nel Mar Orientale possa essere influenzata dai modelli di circolazione su scala di bacino, dalle correnti di confine e dall’attività dei vortici mesoscalari.
