La manioca (Manihot sculenta Crantz) appartiene alla famiglia delle euforbiacee e la sua coltivazione è classificata come temporanea. La sua radice, ricca di amido, è la parte che viene effettivamente utilizzata, sia per l’alimentazione umana e animale sia, sempre più spesso, come input in diversi settori produttivi. In alcune regioni, anche le foglie sono utilizzate per l’alimentazione umana o animale (in quest’ultimo caso, come modo economico di aggiungere proteine alle razioni). Il lavoro è stato svolto in collaborazione con la Scuola Tecnologica Statale del Pará (ETEPA), situata nella regione della Bassa Amazzonia, nel comune di Monte Alegre, Pará. Lo sviluppo economico di questa regione è sostenuto essenzialmente dall’agricoltura familiare, con la manioca come principale fonte di reddito e sussistenza. Si spera che la caratterizzazione dei genotipi di cassava qui delineata possa contribuire in modo significativo al miglioramento del sistema di coltivazione della coltura nell’ecosistema in questione, con conseguente miglioramento della qualità del prodotto per il consumatore e del reddito e della qualità della vita per i produttori rurali.
