XX wieku, ujawnia dwa konkurujące ze sobą światopoglądy w Kościele katolickim: podejście ontologiczne, reprezentowane przez Ratzingera, które postrzega prawdę jako wieczną, niezmienną i przekazaną z góry, oraz podejście historyczno-fenomenologiczne, reprezentowane przez Kaspera, które uznaje, że ludzkie doświadczenie dynamicznie kształtuje koncepcje prawdy. Te konkurujące ze sobą światopoglądy mają szersze implikacje teologiczne w kontekście tego, jak katolicy podchodzą do swoich relacji z judaizmem i jak je rozumieją. Ponieważ światopogląd historyczno-fenomenologiczny jest bardziej otwarty na doświadczenie „innego' pod względem religijnym, okazał się on bardziej korzystny dla procesu dialogu katolicko-żydowskiego, a także lepiej odzwierciedla wytyczne Soboru Watykańskiego II i dokumentu Nostra Aetate. W niniejszej książce autorka dowodzi, że Kościół katolicki ogólnie zmierza w kierunku światopoglądu historyczno-fenomenologicznego, odchodząc od światopoglądu ontologicznego, co jest najbardziej widoczne w jego relacjach z Żydami, a wybór papieża Franciszka w 2013 roku stanowi najlepszy przykład tej tendencji.
