La pourriture grise (BGM) causée par Botrytis cinerea est un agent destructeur de nombreuses cultures importantes sur le plan agronomique dans le monde entier. L’oignon, la tomate et le pois chiche sont quelques-unes des cultures importantes du Pakistan qui sont infectées par la BGM. L’oignon et la tomate étant les principaux ingrédients de la cuisine pakistanaise, les pertes de rendement, même à petite échelle, ne peuvent être compensées. Pour lutter contre la BGM, certaines pratiques culturales telles que la rotation des cultures, le travail du sol, l’utilisation de semences exemptes de maladies et de fongicides synthétiques sont utilisées. L’utilisation généralisée de produits chimiques rend les agents pathogènes résistants aux fongicides, qui deviennent alors inefficaces. De plus, les fongicides non seulement ne permettent pas d’éliminer les agents pathogènes des cultures, mais ils présentent également des risques pour notre environnement. Les composés antifongiques naturels issus de plantes, facilement biodégradables, peu toxiques pour les mammifères et ayant un impact minimal sur l’environnement, constituent la meilleure alternative aux fongicides synthétiques. Le Pongamia pinnata est une plante médicinale connue depuis des siècles et dont la valeur médicinale est reconnue. Elle est utilisée dans cette étude pour évaluer son activité antifongique contre B. cinerea.
