A podridão cinzenta (BGM) causada pela Botrytis cinerea é um agente destrutivo de muitas culturas agronómicas importantes em todo o mundo. Cebola, tomate e grão-de-bico são algumas das culturas importantes do Paquistão que são infetadas pela BGM. Como a cebola e o tomate são os principais ingredientes da culinária paquistanesa, as perdas de rendimento, mesmo em escala ligeiramente grande, não podem ser compensadas. Para controlar a BGM, existem algumas práticas culturais, como rotação de culturas, práticas de lavoura, uso de sementes livres de doenças e fungicidas sintéticos. O uso generalizado de produtos químicos torna os patógenos resistentes aos fungicidas, tornando-os inativos. Além disso, os fungicidas não só tornam as culturas livres de patógenos, mas também representam riscos para o nosso ambiente. Os compostos antifúngicos naturais das plantas, que são facilmente biodegradáveis, têm baixa toxicidade para os mamíferos e impacto ambiental mínimo, sendo a melhor alternativa aos fungicidas sintéticos. A Pongamia pinnata é uma planta medicinal conhecida há séculos e com valor medicinal reconhecido, utilizada neste estudo para avaliar a sua atividade antifúngica contra a B. cinerea.
