L’ouvrage explore la nécessité de permettre des réformes structurelles et conceptuelles du système éducatif camerounais qui, depuis l’indépendance, n’a pas été en mesure de contribuer efficacement au développement social et individuel des Camerounais. L’ouvrage s’interroge également sur le manque d’autonomie des enseignants dans leur propre profession. Les résultats suggèrent que le programme d’études au Cameroun est très centralisé et reflète un fort contenu occidental. Les résultats indiquent également qu’il y a un manque de voix indigène dans le programme d’études sociales. Les enseignants au Cameroun ont tendance à ne pas s’engager dans la prise de décision critique lorsqu’ils enseignent des questions sur le Cameroun et sur le monde pour de nombreuses raisons : frustration à l’égard du système scolaire, programme centralisé écrasant, manque de soutien, infrastructures médiocres et manque de confiance dans leurs connaissances, le programme extraverti et leur choix de ne pas rejeter de manière critique le statu quo colonial hérité. Cependant, ils comprennent que le programme d’études sociales et l’ensemble du système éducatif ont un besoin urgent de réformes structurelles et conceptuelles.
