O livro explora a necessidade de permitir reformas estruturais e conceptuais no sistema educativo dos Camarões que, desde a independência, não tem sido capaz de contribuir eficazmente para o desenvolvimento social e individual dos camaroneses. O livro também se interroga sobre a falta de capacidade de ação dos professores na sua própria profissão. As conclusões sugerem que o currículo nos Camarões é muito centralizado e reflecte um forte conteúdo ocidental. As conclusões também indicam que há uma falta de voz indígena no currículo de estudos sociais. Os professores nos Camarões tendem a não se envolver na tomada de decisões críticas quando ensinam questões sobre os Camarões e sobre o mundo por muitas razões: frustração com o sistema escolar, currículo centralizado esmagador, falta de apoio, infra-estruturas deficientes e falta de confiança nos seus conhecimentos, o currículo extrovertido e a sua escolha de não rejeitar criticamente o status quo colonial herdado. No entanto, compreendem que o programa de estudos sociais e todo o sistema educativo necessitam urgentemente de uma reforma estrutural e concetual.
