Um grupo de dez alunos de uma escola secundária urbana foi entrevistado sobre as suas experiências em cursos avançados (AP) e não avançados no ensino secundário. Os participantes que frequentaram um curso avançado de cálculo descreveram oportunidades durante o ensino secundário em que o capital cultural e social conduziram a uma experiência bem-sucedida na faculdade. Aqueles que não frequentaram um curso avançado de cálculo descreveram uma experiência diferente. Para alguns neste grupo, os desportos universitários ou a família proporcionaram uma fonte de capital social e cultural. Todos os participantes relataram que as experiências bem-sucedidas na faculdade foram resultado do crescimento pessoal.
