Gastroretencyjne systemy dostarczania leków zostały zaprojektowane w celu wydłużenia czasu retencji w żołądku i umożliwienia kontrolowanego lub przedłużonego uwalniania leku. Takie podejście zwiększa stężenie leku w miejscu docelowym, potencjalnie poprawiając biodostępność i zmniejszając wymaganą dawkę. W ciągu ostatnich dziesięcioleci opracowano różne technologie, z których każda wykorzystuje różne mechanizmy przedłużania retencji leku w przewodzie pokarmowym przy jednoczesnej optymalizacji biodostępności.
