Foi investigada a aplicação de biochar em solos de argila arenosa para reduzir a lixiviação de poluentes orgânicos, por exemplo, hidrocarbonetos, pesticidas ou antibióticos. O biochar derivado da madeira avaliado no nosso estudo foi o co-produto sólido de um gasificador em escala real que alimenta uma central de produção combinada de calor e electricidade. A investigação visava demonstrar múltiplos benefícios ambientais com a utilização inovadora deste biochar como corrector de solos. As experiências de sorção por lotes indicaram que o biochar adicionado ao solo aumentou os coeficientes de partição. As experiências de lixiviação por coluna indicaram um caudal de água porosa reduzido e, por conseguinte, uma redução dos riscos de lixiviação de poluentes. Modelos numéricos interligaram observações de estudo de lotes e colunas.
