Fitoremediacja to nowa technologia, w której specjalnie wyselekcjonowane i zmodyfikowane rośliny gromadzące metale rozkładają, wydobywają, zatrzymują lub unieruchamiają zanieczyszczenia z gleby i wody. Rośliny mogą pomóc w usuwaniu wielu rodzajów zanieczyszczeń, w tym metali, pestycydów, materiałów wybuchowych i ropy naftowej. Technologia ta stanowi innowacyjną i opłacalną alternatywę dla bardziej znanych metod oczyszczania stosowanych w miejscach składowania odpadów niebezpiecznych. Zanieczyszczone gleby i wody stanowią poważny problem ekologiczny i zagrożenie dla zdrowia ludzkiego. Przyczyną zanieczyszczenia gleby jest gromadzenie się metali ciężkich i metaloidów w wyniku emisji z szybko rozwijających się obszarów przemysłowych, składowania odpadów o wysokiej zawartości metali, odpadów kopalnianych, benzyny i farb ołowiowych, pestycydów, nawadniania ściekami, stosowania nawozów, obornika, osadów ściekowych, pozostałości po spalaniu węgla, wycieków substancji petrochemicznych i opadów atmosferycznych.
