Phytoremediation ist eine neue Technologie, bei der speziell ausgewählte und gezüchtete Pflanzen, die Metalle anreichern, Schadstoffe aus Boden und Wasser abbauen, extrahieren, binden oder immobilisieren. Pflanzen können dabei helfen, zahlreiche Arten von Verunreinigungen zu beseitigen, darunter Metalle, Pestizide, Sprengstoffe und Öl. Diese Technologie ist eine innovative, kostengünstige Alternative zu den etablierteren Behandlungsmethoden, die an Standorten mit gefährlichen Abfällen zum Einsatz kommen. Kontaminierte Böden und Gewässer stellen ein großes ökologisches und gesundheitliches Problem dar. Die Ursache für die Bodenverschmutzung ist die Anreicherung von Schwermetallen und Metalloiden durch Emissionen aus den schnell wachsenden Industriegebieten, die Entsorgung von metallhaltigen Abfällen, Bergbauabfälle, verbleites Benzin und Farben, Pestizide, Bewässerung mit Abwasser, Ausbringung von Düngemitteln, Tierdung, Klärschlamm, Rückständen aus der Kohleverbrennung, Verschüttungen von Petrochemikalien und atmosphärische Ablagerungen.
