O surgimento de vírus da gripe resistentes a medicamentos e a ameaça de pandemias destacam a necessidade de novos e eficazes agentes antivirais. Como parte de um programa contínuo de triagem de produtos naturais contra a gripe, alguns curcuminoides foram isolados de um extrato metanólico de Curcuma longa L. Todos os compostos tiveram fortes efeitos inibidores sobre as neuraminidases de duas estirpes virais da gripe, H1N1 e H9N2. Além disso, eles exibiram atividade inibitória significativa contra as neuraminidases da nova gripe H1N1 (WT) e da nova H1N1 resistente ao oseltamivir (mutante H274Y) expressas em células 293T. Além disso, foram investigadas as relações detalhadas entre a estrutura e a atividade dos compostos. Estes resultados sugerem que os curcuminoides de C. longa podem ser moléculas suplementares potenciais na luta contra a gripe A (H1N1).
