Нигерийскому обществу не хватает глубокой экологической осведомленности, знаний и отношения (AKA) к устойчивой экологической практике. В данном исследовании рассматриваются различные экологические проблемы в обществе и анализируется, как экологическое образование (ЭО) может помочь в развитии осведомленности, знаний и отношения учащихся к окружающей среде. В исследовании рассматриваются две средние школы, выбранные случайным образом в штате Лагос, Нигерия, с дополнительным наблюдением за мероприятиями по экологическому образованию в некоторых начальных школах в районе исследования. Эмпирическая часть исследования включает в себя качественный и количественный анализ данных, полученных из первичных и вторичных источников в рамках социальных и экспериментальных исследований. В ходе исследования была доказана взаимосвязь между отношением, знаниями и осведомленностью учащихся в отношении окружающей среды, в которой они принимают участие. Исследование также показало, что существующие компоненты экологических тем в рамках реструктурированной основной образовательной программы (UBE) для студентов не были сделаны обязательными, что способствовало отсутствию у студентов экологической осведомленности, знаний и отношения к окружающей среде в обществе.
