Tobias Philipp kombiniert die Theorien Bruno Latours und Harrison Whites, um mit ihrer Hilfe das interdisziplinäre Feld der Netzwerkforschung in den soziologischen Blick zu nehmen. An einem typischen Artikel arbeitet er beispielhaft dortige Argumentationsstrukturen qualitativ heraus und vervollständigt diese Eindrücke mit einer quantitativen Analyse der Rezeption des Artikels. Es zeigt sich, dass die Kombination beider Theorien und ihrer zentralen Konzepte von Übersetzung, Netdom, Story und Switching sich sowohl in der qualitativen wie quantitativen Arbeit bewähren. Weiter eröffnen sie das Potential, die soziologische Rezeption mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlich dominierter Forschungsgebiete anzuleiten und genuin soziologische Expertise dort anschlussfähig einzubringen.
