Estudos recentes sobre o e-Learning (utilização de tecnologias educativas na sala de aula para ligar os alunos aos currículos e à instrução) centraram-se nas relações entre o corpo docente e os alunos, em vez de se perguntar se estas tecnologias promovem (ou não) uma comunidade de aprendizagem eficaz (Garrison & Archer, 2000. Porque é que o e-Learning é um apelo para as faculdades e universidades? Sem dúvida, o ensino à distância, ou a utilização de computadores e de sistemas de gestão da aprendizagem (LMS) como o Blackboard, o Moodle e o Canvas, para ligar estudantes e professores num ambiente de aprendizagem que utiliza telemóveis, computadores portáteis e tecnologias dos meios de comunicação social, está a evoluir como uma oportunidade pedagógica. Os académicos de meados do século XX debatem de facto as questões, os conceitos e as tendências relativas à mudança da pedagogia através dos computadores e da conetividade à Internet.
