Obecne problemy środowiskowe są związane z odpadami stałymi, z których wynikają różne problemy: zanieczyszczenie atmosfery, gdy są spalane, gdy są wyrzucane na ulicę, składowanie tych odpadów powoduje zatykanie się kanalizacji, a także są one wyrzucane do wąwozów lub rzek, ponieważ nie ma zarządzania, a usługi zbiórki są niewystarczające. Na potrzeby tej pracy przeprowadzono siedmiodniową diagnozę (NMX-AA-015-1985) w 54 gospodarstwach domowych w społeczności Máximo Rojas Xalostoc, gdzie odpady były zbierane codziennie, rejestrowane, ważone i określane ilościowo (NMX-AA-022-1985). Dzięki uzyskanym danym pracowaliśmy nad propozycją planu gospodarki odpadami w tej społeczności, który obejmuje zamiatanie ulic, zbiórkę odpadów z gospodarstw domowych i transport do jednostki transferowej 'Metztli'. Odpady organiczne będą mielone w celu kompostowania; odpady z recyklingu będą segregowane, ważone i przechowywane do późniejszej sprzedaży. Odpady biologiczno-zakaźne będą deponowane w celi ostatecznej utylizacji.
