The process of casting ferrous and non-ferrous metals uses moulds, usually made of sand, to shape the part. Depending on the mould manufacturing process (mainly based on green sand and using phenolic or alkyd resin, among others), the sand may contain substances that prevent direct disposal in the environment, and in most cases it is classified according to ABNT NBR 10004:2004 as Class IIA - Non-Inert waste. The reuse of this waste is limited, as its characteristics change significantly after use. On the other hand, the use (reuse) of this by-product in civil construction is a technically viable alternative; however, the effect of its addition must be evaluated, especially from a mechanical and environmental point of view. Thus, the objective of this book is to study the effect of using foundry sand waste in the manufacture of cementitious artefacts.
