Małże olbrzymie, jak się je powszechnie nazywa, należą do najbardziej wyspecjalizowanych i największych żyjących małży. Jeden z gatunków małży olbrzymich, Tridacna gigas, osiąga długość ponad metra. Mają one wąski zasięg występowania i występują wyłącznie w tropikalnych rafach w regionie faunistycznym Indo-Pacyfiku. Populacje małży olbrzymich na całym świecie gwałtownie spadły, a wiele gatunków jest zagrożonych wyginięciem z powodu nieuregulowanego pozyskiwania ich na potrzeby żywieniowe i jako pamiątki oraz z powodu niszczenia siedlisk. Jednak od kilku ostatnich dziesięcioleci na całym świecie podejmuje się wiele wysiłków, aby ponownie wprowadzić je do środowiska poprzez hodowlę morską. Pomimo tych wysiłków populacje małży olbrzymich nadal maleją na całym świecie. W Indiach małże olbrzymie występują wyłącznie na rafach Lakshadweep oraz Andaman i Nicobar. Trzy gatunki małży olbrzymich są chronione w Indiach na mocy załącznika I do ustawy o ochronie dzikiej przyrody (Wildlife (Protection) Act), co zapewnia im najwyższy stopień ochrony prawnej, jaki może przysługiwać jakiemukolwiek gatunkowi. Niniejsze badanie jest pierwszym na subkontynencie indyjskim, którego celem jest zrozumienie ekologii populacji, statusu i potrzeb w zakresie ochrony Tridacna maxima, a także stanowi podstawę do opracowania planu odbudowy populacji małży olbrzymich dla rządu Indii.
