Il crescente fabbisogno di riso in Nigeria ha continuato a rappresentare un peso per il governo federale. Con l’avvicinarsi e il superamento della scadenza del 2015 per il divieto di importazione totale di riso, sono ancora innumerevoli le sfide che la coltivazione del riso in Nigeria deve affrontare. Queste sfide vanno dalla scarsa varietà della coltura (riso) piantata, all’inadeguatezza delle infrastrutture nell’area di produzione. La Nigeria è dotata di una ricca superficie agricola stimata in circa 71,2 milioni di ettari, di cui 34 milioni di ettari sono coltivati. Ma nonostante tutte queste potenzialità, c’è un notevole divario tra la stima dell’offerta e la domanda di cibo. A causa di questa carenza, la Nigeria importa i principali prodotti alimentari, tra cui il riso. Questa enorme importazione continua a uccidere le nostre industrie locali.
