Il declino delle specie di zooplancton è stato osservato prima del 2000 ed è proseguito fino al 2010. Solo una delle nove specie di Cladocera registrate nel 1996/1997 è stata ritrovata nel 2010. Delle cinque specie di Copepoda registrate nel 1996/1997, solo una, Acartia tonsa, è stata rilevata dopo il 2000. Non è stato possibile verificare l’impatto di M. leidyi sulle specie di zooplancton confrontando la media annuale dell’abbondanza di zooplancton, in particolare quella di A. tonsa, nel 1996/1997, prima dell’invasione di M. leidyi, e dopo l’invasione nel periodo 2001-2010. La ragione della scomparsa delle specie di Copepoda e Cladocera non è dovuta alla selettività dell’alimentazione delle diverse specie da parte di M. leidyi, poiché quest’ultimo si nutre in modo non selettivo. I cambiamenti climatici, la siccità, l’attività antropica, la pesca eccessiva e l’aumento del carico di inquinanti da parte del deflusso fluviale possono avere un ruolo importante nell’aumento della popolazione di zooplancton e nella perdita di specie endemiche nel Mar Caspio meridionale.
