De plus, les garçons afro-américains sont plus nombreux à redoubler que n’importe quel autre groupe. Des études montrent que lorsque des élèves, en particulier des garçons afro-américains, sont maintenus en troisième, ils ont plus de chances d’abandonner leurs études et, par conséquent, de ne pas obtenir leur diplôme d’études secondaires. La plupart des études antérieures sur le redoublement en troisième se concentrent sur les districts urbains, ce qui limite leur portée. On ignore donc si la probabilité de redoubler en troisième et l’impact de cet échec sont significatifs dans les zones suburbaines intégrées, où les Afro-Américains représentent un pourcentage plus faible, mais en augmentation, de la population scolaire. Bien que la gravité de ces problèmes soit documentée, peu d’études ont été menées sur les obstacles à la réussite scolaire des élèves afro-américains dans les environnements suburbains intégrés. L’objectif de cette étude est d’examiner les expériences des garçons afro-américains en troisième dans un lycée d’une communauté suburbaine de New York.
