L’objectif de cet article est de décrire l’expérience de production de coton dans des consortiums agroécologiques par des agriculteurs familiaux de la communauté d’Irapuá dans la municipalité de Nova Russas (2009 à 2011), dans l’État du Ceará. L’agriculture conventionnelle adopte un modèle qui ne permet pas un développement durable, favorisant la dégradation de l’environnement, l’exclusion sociale des moins favorisés et la concentration des terres. Face à ce mode de vie non durable, des mouvements sociaux et des chercheurs ont entamé des études à la recherche de techniques qui ne dégraderaient pas l’environnement et combineraient le savoir populaire et les connaissances scientifiques pour contribuer à la régénération des écosystèmes. C’est ainsi qu’est née la science agroécologique, qui va au-delà de la production alimentaire pour s’orienter vers une agriculture durable garantissant la préservation des sols, des ressources en eau, de la faune et des écosystèmes naturels, tout en assurant la sécurité alimentaire.
