L’obiettivo di questo articolo è descrivere l’esperienza di produzione di cotone in consorzi agroecologici da parte degli agricoltori familiari della comunità di Irapuá nel comune di Nova Russas (2009-2011), nello Stato del Ceará. L’agricoltura convenzionale adotta un modello che non garantisce uno sviluppo sostenibile, favorendo il degrado ambientale, l’esclusione sociale dei meno favoriti e la concentrazione delle terre. Di fronte a questo stile di vita insostenibile, movimenti sociali e ricercatori hanno avviato studi alla ricerca di tecniche che non degradassero l’ambiente e combinassero le conoscenze popolari con quelle scientifiche per favorire la rigenerazione degli ecosistemi. Da qui è nata la costruzione della scienza agroecologica, che va oltre la produzione di cibo per arrivare a un’agricoltura sostenibile che garantisca la conservazione del suolo, delle risorse idriche, della fauna selvatica e degli ecosistemi naturali, assicurando allo stesso tempo la sicurezza alimentare.
