Jakiś czas temu, kiedy zapytaliśmy Brazylijczyka, czego nauczył się na lekcjach języka angielskiego w szkole, odpowiedział: „Nauczyłem się mówić 'Książka jest na stole„'. Badania przeprowadzone w tej książce pokazują nam, że nauczanie języków obcych w Brazylii przeszło długą drogę, ale wciąż mamy przed sobą długą drogę. Stąd tytuł książki „Książka wciąż jest na stole'. W trzech rozdziałach tej książki przedstawiamy niektóre krajowe, latynoamerykańskie i BRICS wskaźniki dotyczące nauczania języków obcych i znajomości języka angielskiego przez ludność, a także niektóre metody i podejścia stosowane w nauczaniu języków obcych. Na koniec przedstawiamy kilka sugestii dotyczących planowania lekcji języka angielskiego przy użyciu zarówno zeszytu ucznia języka angielskiego, dystrybuowanego przez rząd stanu São Paulo, jak i podręcznika języka angielskiego, który jest dostarczany przez rząd federalny. Naszym celem nie jest wyczerpanie tematu, ale otwarcie drogi do nowych perspektyw nauczania języka angielskiego w brazylijskich szkołach publicznych.
