Kreuzkümmel (Cuminum cyminum L.) ist eine wichtige Gewürzpflanze auf Weltebene und Indien ist der weltweit führende Produzent (70 % der Weltproduktion), Verbraucher und Exporteur von Kreuzkümmel. Fast 80 % der angebauten Ernte werden in Indien verbraucht. Der Ernteertrag wird durch mehrere biotische und abiotische Faktoren beeinflusst, darunter die Knollenfäule, eine der am meisten gefürchteten Krankheiten und ein großes Produktionshindernis für den erfolgreichen Anbau von Kreuzkümmel.Der Krankheitsausbruch wurde bei fast einem Monat altem Erntegut bei warmem, feuchtem Wetter in der epidemischen Form im Blütestadium beobachtet, und die Samen können nicht zur vollen Größe heranreifen. Die Samen schrumpfen und werden beim Worfeln leicht weggeblasen. Früh gesäte Pflanzen weisen eine hohe Krankheitsintensität auf und produzieren nicht vermarktbares Saatgut.
