Le bien-être des enfants, en particulier dans la province rurale du Limpopo en Afrique du Sud, est préoccupant. Le projet visait à introduire un suivi de la croissance dans les écoles maternelles, où se trouvent la plupart des enfants de moins de cinq ans. La raison en était que ces enfants ne sont plus emmenés dans les établissements de santé pour un suivi de leur croissance une fois qu’ils ont terminé leur programme de vaccination de 18 mois. Les enfants de moins de cinq ans sont plus vulnérables au développement de la malnutrition. Par conséquent, une fois que le programme de suivi et de promotion de la croissance est étendu aux écoles maternelles, la plupart des enfants peuvent être pris en charge et leurs besoins en matière de croissance, de santé et de nutrition peuvent être identifiés et satisfaits.
