Il Camerun, in virtù del suo passato coloniale, ha accolto diverse culture, civiltà e lingue esogene. Ciò ha senza dubbio lasciato un segno indelebile nel panorama linguistico del Paese. Dai Cartaginesi, ai Greci, ai Portoghesi, passando per i Tedeschi, fino ai Francesi e agli Inglesi, il panorama linguistico del Camerun non poteva rimanere lo stesso e l’impatto è ancora oggi percepibile. Una delle conseguenze più evidenti di questi contatti è che l’inglese e il francese sono rimasti mezzi di comunicazione fondamentali nel Paese. L’introduzione di queste lingue esogene in un repertorio linguistico già estremamente diversificato ha comportato e comporta tuttora il ricorso a intermediari (denominati interpreti) per una comunicazione efficace. Allo stato attuale, non c’è nessun camerunese che possa vantarsi di essere libero da qualsiasi sfida linguistica in un Paese in cui il 70% dei cittadini vive in zone rurali e non padroneggia le lingue utilizzate nei settori pubblici. L’accesso ai servizi pubblici, come quelli sanitari, è una sfida considerevole che può essere superata solo con l’aiuto di interpreti.
