L’allelopatia è uno dei fattori che contribuiscono alla formazione e al mantenimento delle fioriture cianobatteriche e microalgali, che colpiscono fortemente gli ecosistemi marini costieri e causano problemi economici per l’acquacoltura. Inoltre, alcuni cianobatteri e microalghe producono composti nocivi che possono avere effetti negativi su piante, animali e persino sull’uomo. Negli ultimi decenni, le acque costiere del mondo hanno registrato un aumento del numero di fioriture algali dannose. Inoltre, è stato descritto che le fioriture cianobatteriche e microalgali si stanno verificando in un numero maggiore di aree rispetto al passato e ora questo fenomeno viene segnalato regolarmente. Tuttavia, nonostante la gravità del problema, i rapporti sulla presenza e sulle conseguenze degli effetti allelopatici di cianobatteri e microalghe negli ecosistemi acquatici sono ancora insufficienti. È quindi importante condurre uno studio più approfondito su questo fenomeno.
