Allelopathie ist einer der Faktoren, die zur Bildung und Aufrechterhaltung von Cyanobakterien- und Mikroalgenblüten beitragen, die die Küstenökosysteme stark beeinträchtigen und wirtschaftliche Probleme für die Aquakultur verursachen. Darüber hinaus produzieren einige Cyanobakterien und Mikroalgen schädliche Verbindungen, die negative Auswirkungen auf Pflanzen, Tiere und sogar Menschen haben können. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat die Zahl der schädlichen Algenblüten in den Küstengewässern der Welt zugenommen. Darüber hinaus wurde beschrieben, dass Cyanobakterien- und Mikroalgenblüten in mehr Gebieten als je zuvor auftreten, und mittlerweile wird regelmäßig über dieses Phänomen berichtet. Trotz der Schwere des Problems gibt es jedoch immer noch nicht genügend Berichte über das Auftreten und die Folgen allelopathischer Effekte von Cyanobakterien und Mikroalgen in aquatischen Ökosystemen. Daher ist es wichtig, dieses Phänomen intensiver zu untersuchen.
