O estudo da cultura visual na educação artística constitui uma abordagem centrada no aluno que valoriza os benefícios e a consciência dos alunos em relação às imagens mediáticas que observam diariamente, respeitando o seu desejo de contribuir para a criação desses meios de comunicação. A Cultura Visual defende o envolvimento dos alunos, individualmente ou em grupo, com os significados das imagens que vêem, a manipulação e reciclagem de imagens digitais como forma de conhecimento, e a reflexão analítica antes, durante e após o processo de criação artística. Além disso, estudos e investigações dos últimos 20 anos têm apoiado fortemente a inclusão dos quatro domínios artísticos como elementos curriculares: história e cultura da arte, crítica de arte, produção artística e estética. A exploração destes componentes está também relacionada com a melhoria da educação artística baseada na disciplina (DBAE) e continua a orientar a tomada de decisões sobre o conteúdo curricular em programas baseados em padrões atualmente. O objetivo deste estudo foi introduzir um novo método de ensino da pintura utilizando a Educação Artística Baseada na Disciplina e o modelo de Educação Artística da Cultura Visual.
