O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o impacto do ensino com recurso à tecnologia com o do ensino sem recurso à tecnologia na aquisição de competências matemáticas por parte de alunos do oitavo ano. Foram investigadas quatro questões de investigação: até que ponto existe uma diferença entre os alunos do oitavo ano que aprendem matemática com software educativo e os que aprendem sem ele? Existem diferenças entre as pontuações de ganho dos grupos no pré-teste e no pós-teste de matemática WASL? A utilização de software educativo de matemática melhora a auto-perceção da competência matemática dos alunos? Existem diferenças entre as pontuações de ganho dos grupos no pré-teste e no pós-teste da auto-perceção do inquérito sobre a competência matemática? Para avaliar as competências matemáticas, o investigador utilizou um inquérito pré-pós-teste de 19 perguntas e um teste prático de amostra padronizado WASL de 42 perguntas no início e no fim do período de estudo. Participaram neste estudo 41 alunos do oitavo ano (23 do sexo feminino e 18 do sexo masculino), com idades compreendidas entre os 13 e os 14 anos. A conceção da investigação utilizou um estudo quase-experimental com um grupo de controlo e um grupo de tratamento.
